I have the great good fortune of living in Vancouver. It’s a wonderful place any day of the year, but having the Olympics here was extra-special. Not in an ‘alternate universe’ kind of way; there were lots more people and events, but nothing seemed out of place. For Vancouver.
Actually, I lie. All the advertising in town was replaced by McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Visa and so on. I used to like Big Macs when I was a kid. Now when I see one my stomach starts turning. The pervasiveness of advertising is bad enough as it is, but these past two weeks were very much an assault against my insides.
I feel like I need to travel to a foreign country whose ads I don’t recognize. That way they’ll go in one eye and out the other.
